Ohio Gun Laws in Plain English

In Ohio, you can carry a concealed handgun without a permit if you are at least 21 years old and legally allowed to own a gun. You don't need to register your firearms or get a permit to buy them. However, you must be careful in Columbus, where local laws restrict magazine capacity to 29 rounds. Also, while you can carry without a permit, you still cannot carry in schools or government buildings. If you are stopped by police, you must tell them you are carrying only if they ask you.

    Critical: Ohio Gun Law Gotchas

These are the most important things to know that could get you arrested or charged with a crime:

    • #1The federal 1,000-foot Gun-Free School Zone (18 U.S.C. § 922(q)) applies - constitutional carry does NOT exempt you; you need a state-issued CHL to be exempt.
    • #2In Columbus, possessing a magazine with 30 or more rounds is currently illegal due to a court injunction against state preemption (Columbus City Code 2323.31).
    • #3If you use marijuana (even legally under Ohio Issue 2), you are federally prohibited from owning firearms (18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(3)).
    • #4You must notify a police officer that you are carrying ONLY if they ask you (ORC 2923.12(B)(1)).
    • #5Carrying a firearm into a room where liquor is dispensed is a felony if you consume ANY alcohol or are under the influence (ORC 2923.121).
    • #6Private 'No Guns' signs have the force of law; violating them is Criminal Trespass (ORC 2911.21).
    • #7If you are 18-20 years old, you can buy a long gun but cannot carry a loaded handgun in a vehicle; you must transport it unloaded and secured (ORC 2923.16).
    • #8You cannot carry in a courthouse or a police station, even with a permit (ORC 2923.126(B)).
    • #9Constructive possession applies to NFA items; having parts to build an unregistered suppressor is a felony (ORC 2923.17).
    • #10Carrying on a college campus is generally illegal unless the specific university board authorizes it (ORC 2923.126(B)(5)).
    • #11Columbus also enforces a safe storage ordinance requiring locking devices when guns are stored (Columbus City Code 2323.19).

Read these carefully - they cover common mistakes that lead to felony charges.
