The Krag-Jørgensen Model 1898 was the U.S. military's first smokeless powder repeating rifle, chambered in .30 U.S. (.30-40 Krag). It featured a unique side-loading magazine designed to prevent rim lock and a smooth bolt action. Despite its innovative design, it was replaced by the 1903 Springfield due to the latter's stripper clip loading and more robust action.
