The Lange Pistole 08 (LP08), or Artillery Luger, was the first German firearm designated for 'assault' companies in WWI, predating submachine guns. Its evolution included a long barrel and shoulder stock for carbine-like range, and crucially, the 32-round Blum drum magazine, which significantly enhanced its trench warfare capabilities. This drum magazine technology was later adopted by the MP18.I submachine gun, marking a pivotal moment in automatic weapon development.
