Alabama has become the 22nd state to enact Constitutional Carry, with Governor Kay Ivey signing HB 272 into law. This legislation, effective January 1st, allows law-abiding citizens to carry handguns without a permit. The bill includes provisions to address law enforcement concerns, such as allowing temporary firearm confiscation during investigations if reasonable suspicion of criminal conduct or a safety threat exists, and allocating up to $5 million to sheriff's offices to offset lost permit fee revenue. Several other states, including Georgia, Nebraska, Ohio, and Indiana, are also considering similar legislation.
