The Air Force has reissued the Sig Sauer M18 to Global Strike Command following supplemental inspections prompted by a fatal incident. Investigations into the incident, which led to involuntary manslaughter charges, are ongoing. Initial inspections of 7,970 M18s revealed 191 with issues related to accelerated wear on the safety, sear, or striker, a failure rate of 2.4%. This rate significantly exceeds SIG's projected occasional failure rate for the US Army. The Air Force is now moving up maintenance and inspection schedules for its 125,000 M18s to address these wear concerns.
