History & Development

Jeff Cooper wanted a better fighting cartridge. The legendary firearms instructor and founder of Gunsite Academy believed the ideal combat handgun should fire a .40-caliber bullet at 200 grains and 1,000 fps — enough energy to stop a fight decisively from a semi-automatic platform. Cooper partnered with Swedish ammunition manufacturer FFV Norma AB, and in 1983 they delivered the 10mm Auto.

The Bren Ten Disaster

The first pistol chambered in 10mm was the Bren Ten, manufactured by Dornaus & Dixon. It was a compelling design on paper — a CZ-75 derivative scaled up for the new cartridge. What Barrel Length Means for 10mm

The barrel length chart tells two stories depending on which load you're running.

For downloaded Federal Hydra-Shok, the velocity gain from 2 inches to 6 inches is 252 fps — a 30% increase. The curve is gentle because there's less pressure pushing the bullet.

For full-power Buffalo Bore, the gain is 317 fps over the same range — 28%. But the starting velocity at 2 inches (1,111 fps) already exceeds the Federal load's velocity at 6 inches (1,093 fps). The full-power load at its worst still outperforms the downloaded load at its best.

The FBI Window and Beyond

The FBI protocol standard is 12-18 inches of penetration through calibrated ballistic gel. For a self-defense cartridge designed for human threats, that window balances penetration depth against over-penetration risk. But 10mm wasn't designed just for human threats. With a lighter 150gr JHP, penetration came in at approximately 17.5 inches with 0.610-inch expansion and 110 grains retained. Both loads punch deep and expand wide — but the 200gr over-penetrates well past the FBI ceiling.

This is where 10mm separates from every other semi-auto cartridge.

Banana Ballistics tested 10mm against .45 ACP in gel and found 10mm penetrated through lumber at 4.6 inches compared to .45 ACP's 3 inches. The energy difference is real and measurable. In a separate steel plate test, Banana Ballistics showed 10mm at 1,242 fps penetrating a 1/8-inch steel plate that 9mm failed to breach.

The terminal performance gap between 9mm and 10mm is real — but shot placement still beats caliber, and 9mm's lower recoil makes accurate placement easier under stress.

If you want the .45-caliber bullet diameter and subsonic suppressed performance of .45 ACP in a more energetic package, 10mm delivers that — but at the cost of significantly more recoil and more expensive ammo.

The wrong reason to buy 10mm is "it's the .44 Mag of semi-autos." It's not. At 623-790 ft-lbs, it produces roughly half the energy of .44 Magnum's 1,400-1,600 ft-lbs. The right reason to buy 10mm is that you need magnum-class penetration in a semi-auto platform with real capacity. For trail guns, hunting handguns, and anyone who spends time where the animals outweigh them, 10mm fills a role that nothing else in a semi-auto touches.
