Summary

Congress reduced the National Firearms Act (NFA) making and transfer tax on suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and AOWs to $0 in 2025, though federal registration remains. Concurrently, several states including Texas (2021), Mississippi (2023), Montana (2025), and South Dakota (2026) have eliminated their state-level requirements for federal NFA compliance for suppressors, fearing a legal trap if ongoing 2026 lawsuits challenging the NFA are successful. Bills are also pending in Arizona (SB1069), Missouri (SB273), and Ohio (SB214).
