The M1918A2 MOR (Manually Operated Rifle) was a unique non-NFA BAR variant developed by Walter Newman of Group Industries in the 1980s. It fired from an open bolt but lacked a gas system, requiring manual cycling for each shot to bypass NFA regulations. Only 68 receivers were produced, with later examples assembled by various gunsmiths, eventually influencing the development of the semi-auto M1918A3 BAR.
In a 2 Gun Action Challenge Match, the FG-42 proved superior to the M1918A3 BAR, primarily due to the BAR's significant weight disadvantage. The FG-42's lighter design and better ergonomics made it more manageable across various stages, especially those involving movement or awkward shooting positions. The BAR's heavy weight, coupled with issues like bipod adjustment and ergonomics, highlighted its obsolescence compared to more modern designs.
