The US Army's transition to the new 6.8mm caliber for its Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW), including the Sig Sauer XM7 and XM250, is significantly impacting ammunition production. The Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, the primary small arms manufacturer, is increasing 6.8mm output and decreasing 5.56mm production, which will affect civilian availability of 5.56 ammunition.
