The AN-94 'Abakan' assault rifle, developed by Gennadiy Nikonov, was designed to replace the AK-74 with a unique 2-round burst capability at 1800 RPM. This high rate of fire, achieved through a complex recoil-delayed mechanism and two-stage feeding system, allows both rounds to strike before the shooter feels recoil, significantly increasing hit probability. Despite its advanced features and adoption by the Russian military, its extreme complexity and high cost led to limited service use.
