Hiding behind tree - can it stop bullets?
A 10-inch pine log was tested as cover against various firearms. Handgun and shotgun rounds (9mm, 7.62x25mm, .22 LR, .32 ACP, 12-gauge birdshot, buckshot, slugs) were completely stopped. Rifle rounds (.223 Rem, 7.62x39mm, .308 Win) penetrated the log, with .308 showing significant energy loss and tumbling. The log is considered reliable cover for handguns but only concealment for rifles.
