Was It Just Too Late to the Game?
The M14 rifle, while a capable firearm and an improvement over the M1 Garand, arrived too late to be truly effective as a standard infantry weapon. Its adoption in 1957 coincided with the rise of intermediate cartridge rifles like the AK-47, and its shortcomings in Vietnam, such as weight and stock vulnerability, led to its replacement by the M16. Despite this, it found success in specialized roles.
